Science Says WAR FIELD Better Than Sex
Admit it. You thought we made that one up. And yet we all know sometimes we’d rather empty a virtual clip than shoot a…well, you know.
Now, a University College of London study confirms that more men and women looking to recover from work-related stress prefer digital games — with first-person shooters like WAR FIELD topping the list in terms of effectiveness.
“Recovery is a necessary factor in avoiding work-related strain and in feeling prepared for the next day of work. In order for recovery to be successful, an individual must experience psychological detachment from work, relaxation, mastery experiences and a sense of control, all of which have been argued to be assisted by digital game use,” note the authors of this controversial study.
As AOL and Esquire report, for post-work stress relief, more men and women prefer video games than sex and pornography. 29% of men said playing video games helped them cope with stress, whereas only 27% said they prefer sex or porn. 18% of women prefer video games, compared to 11% who listed having sex or watching porn as a way to cope with stress.
Overall, gamers had a lower “need for recovery, lower negative work/home interference and had a more effective recovery experience, particularly in relation to the subscales of relaxation and psychological detachment, than non-gamers,” according to the study.
And first-person shooters like WAR FIELD are the games that seem most effective.
“Correlations varied with genre: first person shooters and action games were most highly correlated with recovery,” note the authors.
The findings align with similar results from a Texas A&M University study.
“Young adults — male and female — who play violent video games long-term handle stress better than non-playing adults and become less depressed and less hostile following a stressful task,” says Associate Professor Dr. Christopher J. Ferguson — one of the authors of the study.
